Talk Title: Climate Smart Agriculture and Small Grains

Jared Knock and his wife Kati live near Willow Lake, SD on a farm with their three daughters. Jared and Kati started a diverse set of enterprises to establish their place in rural South Dakota. Their livestock enterprises include a commercial cow/calf herd, a commercial ewe flock, and ownership-management of a contract hog feeding site. The family’s cropland acres are planted to a rotation of corn, oats, soybeans, wheat, and alternative forage crops. Over the past ten years, the family farm has undergone a transformation both physically and ideologically- incorporating new practices such as cover crops, Integrated Pest Management Plans, Nutrient Management Plans, diverse crop rotations, reduced tillage strategies, native grass re-establishment, grazing management plans, pollinator habitat development, and strategic tree plantings. Jared also founded Dakota Vision Ag (DVA), a local retail ag supplier for surrounding farms and ranches. Since 2011, DVA has provided its customers with all types of seed, livestock genetics, and soil health products. DVA has helped more than 100 producers start or advance their soil health journey. Jared holds a passion for regenerative cropping systems, grazing livestock and healthy ecosystems on the landscape.

Jared works in Business Development at Millborn Seeds, based out of Brookings, SD, working to further opportunities for the 1,000+ species of seed that the company markets in the cover crop, forage, native grass, and pollinator seed sectors. Last year alone, Millborn Seeds impacted over 2 million acres of cover crop plantings and several hundred thousand acres of perennial seedings. Jared is also the President of AgSpire, a company owned by Millborn Seeds which focuses on understanding and facilitating cost-share and incentive programs for soil health, conservation, and Ecosystem Service Market programs available from public, private and non-profit sources. AgSpire will offer services to landowners looking to utilize such programs for their farms and ranches through partnerships with NGO’s, supply chains, and companies looking to bolster their ESG platforms.
Currently, Jared serves as the chairperson for the Cover Crops Taskforce for the American Seed Trade Association (ASTA), a member of the Sustainability Working Group for ASTA, and a member of the Grazing Additionality for Carbon Markets working group. Jared is the President of the Cow/calf council for the SD Cattleman’s association.
Jared graduated from South Dakota State University with a degree in Animal Science in 2007. During his college years he was a SD State FFA Officer in 2002-2003, a member of the 2004 Meats Judging Team, a member of the 2005 General Livestock Judging Team, a part of the 2006 National Champion Meat Animal Evaluation Team and spent a semester studying at China Agriculture University in Beijing, China. Jared is a graduate of South Dakota Ag and Rural Leadership Program (SDARL) Class XIII.
